About Electric Dwelling

Hello! I’m Dale, the author of Electric Dwelling.

My family lives in Buffalo, where we’ve had a solar house since 2013. We’d always been interested in the environment and renewable energy, so when we bought our first house, we knew right away that it needed to have solar. Figuring out how to go solar was a confusing journey, so I was inspired to create The Solar Nerd website to give homeowners easy-to-understand and unbiased information about home solar. The Solar Nerd grew in popularity and was acquired by This Old House in 2023.

Now, with Electric Dwelling, I’m on a similar mission to guide homeowners on how to electrify their homes and switch away from fossil fuels.

Why? Some people will make the switch because of better indoor air quality and safety, while others might be motivated to reduce their carbon footprint. Another reason is that electric appliances often perform better than gas counterparts.

My house was built in 1910, so it wasn’t designed to be solely powered by electricity. In fact, it was originally heated by coal! Despite that, I’ve been slowly electrifying my home by adding a heat pump, using an induction cooktop, and adding an electric vehicle charger to my garage.

I’m not sure my house will ever be fully electric, but I’ve been learning a lot of things along the way, which I’ll write about here.

I love to hear feedback, so please let me know how I’m doing or send me your suggestions at dale at electric dwelling dot com.
